Eräs henkilö heitti hiljattain ilmoille lauseen, jonka olen
kuullut turhan monta kertaa.
luku on, jolloin tietty viihteen muoto tulee päästää päiviltä. Jokin logiikka
siinä pitää olla! 18-vuotiaana saa ostaa alkoholia ja ajaa autoa. Kaksikymppisenä
saat jo vahvempaa Alkosta. Suurin piirtein noihin lukemiin asti olet aina liian
vuoristoradassa, koska hauskanpito on aivan liian lapsellista.
Jos pelaaminen pitää lopettaa aikuistuessa, päteekö sama
muihinkin, kuten lautapeleihin? Vanhoilla ryppyisillä käsillä käännellään
Hesarin sivuja eikä rämpytellä Kimblen infernaalista meteliä pitävää noppakupua.
Unohda Aliaksen paniikinomainen sanamättö, saat vielä kohtauksen. Scrabble on
aivan liian lapsellista kun ristikotkin on keksitty.
Entä muu viihde? Minkä ikäisenä en saa enää katsoa elokuvia?
Pitääkö kirjojen lukeminen lopettaa kuusikymppisenä vai saanko armonaikaa
eläkeikään asti? Onko bingo varattu vanhemmille tahoille, vai voinko osallistua,
vaikka en vielä harmaa olekaan. Kuinka on musiikin laita? Pitääkö se lopettaa
kertaheitolla vai vaihdanko radion asteittain Radio Rockista Yle Uutisiin?
Ihmiset tuntuvat kuvittelevan, että aikuisuuden tulee olla
kurjaa.
Veljeni
lasten kanssa on äärimmäisen hauska leikkiä mitä he ikinä keksivätkään.
parantuneet vuosien saatossa. Olen kavereiden kanssa keksinyt omia versioita
eri lautapeleistä ja kokeillut useita eri roolipelejä. Kaikella mitä teen on
In English
Recently
someone asked me something I’ve been asked too many times. Something so
astonishingly stupid, it makes you wonder how these unsung antiheroes manage to
live in the narrow confines of their own heads:
“Aren’t you
a bit too old to be playing games?”
I’ve yet to
receive a definitive answer as to at what age I am supposed to put a specific
form of entertainment out to pasture. Surely
there has to be some logic to it! At 18 you can buy alcohol and drive a car. By
twenty you can score even the stronger spirits from Alko. Until then a person
is always too young for things, but are there also age limits for the old?
Too old for
playing games. Too old for Velcro shoes. Swap out the zipper in your jeans for
buttons. Go to the amusement park and sip coffee while glaring from afar at the
others screaming on the rollercoaster, because having fun is far too childish.
Does the principle
of adults not playing games extend to other things, like board games? Wrinkly
old hands are better suited for turning the pages of a newspaper than setting
up some Mousetrap contraption. Best forget about Guess Who?, it’s not like you
can put names to faces anymore anyway. Scrabble is far too childish in a world
where crossword puzzles already exist.
And what
about other kinds of entertainment? At what age can I no longer watch moves?
Should I stop reading books at sixty or can I at least keep going until
retirement age? Is bingo exclusively reserved for seniors or can those of the
non-silver persuasion participate? What about music? Will I have to quit it
cold turkey or can I phase it out, turning the dial gradually from Radio Rock
to Yle News?
People seem
to have the notion that adulthood should be miserable. Go to work, wear a suit
and act proper. Don’t make jokes, that’s unprofessional. Start playing golf,
drink your coffee black and remember to provide your own professional opinion
on the news of the day, even if no one asked.
Here’s a
thought for everyone with a predilection for sticking their noses where they
don’t belong: I do whatever I damn well like in my free time! And so should
everyone else. I enjoy video games. It’s always a delight to play whatever
games my brother’s kids come up with. The genre of a film, book or song makes
no difference, so long as it’s entertaining.
I still
watch cartoons and many of them have only gotten better over the years. My
friends and I have come up with our own versions of different board games and
tried out several role playing games. All these things I do have only one
singular purpose: to have fun. If it bothers you so tremendously that I have
fun in a different way than you do, you may want to take a long look in the
mirror and wonder which one of us is the one who needs to grow up after all.
